Both Writing And Non-Writing Gigs

If you were to ask me what I like most about what I am doing now with my life, I may have to schedule an appointment to fit you in. Although there have been slow days, overall my weeks are filled with several activities. In addition to my freelance writing, which I have recently expanded into another job platform for some extra work, I am getting more involved in the community and vending season has kicked off.

Let me explain a little further.

My freelance writing has seen an increase from some clients and a reduction from others as long term projects come to an end. I have filled some of the gaps with new clients and some previous ones have returned. What I have also done is started looking for small extra writing jobs at an online source that is designed for short term freelance work. So far, it has generated one or two new jobs a week and I can see it becoming busier.

In addition to my freelance writing, I have also decided to hire out my services for voice over work. I have held off on this for a long time for mostly personal reasons. Now that I have a regular weekly podcast program, I sort of asked myself why I haven’t branched out so I jumped into that pool fairly quickly. I expect these things to produce dividends eventually so I’m in no hurry for a wave of business activity, but I’m ready.

As for my local involvement, in the past month I was elected to three different local volunteer boards. I continue to sit as the Chairman of the Granite Creek Preservation Society and Vice President of the Princeton & District Chamber of Commerce. I added a Director seat on the board of the Princeton & District Museum & Archives Society to the list. I have also taken on a couple of committee roles in that group as well.

Volunteering is nothing new to me. I have been part of many of the local clubs, groups and organizations servicing the community. I am no different than any other volunteer – many of whom have served longer and on many more boards than I have – in that we just want to do something good. For me, now that I don’t have potential conflicts of interest from the newspaper business I once owned, I feel free enough to jump head first into these groups.

The vending part comes from my wife’s home-based business, JamBusters! Brenda and I got serious about vending her home canning products last year as we were closing down the newspaper. It gave us something to do to occupy us as we dealt with our business closure and it has opened many doors. What vending also did for us was that it gave us something we could concentrate on doing as a couple, a team and a partnership.

We have already attended five different vending events in 2017 and have at least that many already booked into next month (May). We are looking forward to regular vending opportunities and finding ways to fit in additional dates just to break it up a little along the way. We have even played a part in establishing a local home-based business/entrepreneur vending event through the Chamber of Commerce to get others involved.

I obviously have barely slowed down since shifting into a home office setting and changing careers in my 50s. If anything, I have a little more time to relax and pick the projects I want to work on. I like being able to do that as I guess it makes me feel as if I have a little more control over my destiny. If that’s not it, at least I know I am much more comfortable where I am now compared to where I was and that has to count for something.

My name is George Elliott. I have been in the Media Industry since 1978. I spent 23 years in Broadcasting and worked in a total of six different radio stations located in southern British Columbia Canada during my career. In 2000 I switched gears and moved into the Print Media Industry at a small town, local weekly community newspaper. In 2004 I bought the paper and operated it with my wife, Brenda until July 2016 when we closed it. I launched a freelance web content and article writing business from my home in January 2014.
