With the combination of a time change and a Full Moon on Halloween, you never really know what to expect out of October. As for my home-based business, it was a steady month of ghostwriting although my totals took a slight dip from September 2020. Here is a quick review of the numbers and then I will share with you details on what a typical writing day is like for me.

The Totals For October 2020

During the month I had 20 different jobs. That's down from 27 a month ago. Out of those jobs, a total of 8 of them came to me through my profile that can be found on Fiverr. The rest of the work I saw this month was from regular clients. As for article volume, I wrote 49 different articles this month, down from 110 recorded in September 2020. Although the numbers dipped from last month to this month, my word count was still pretty high. In October 2020 I wrote 47,500 words. That is just slightly down from the 53,925 words written the previous month.

Where My Work Came From

October was a strange month in a way as all of my writing jobs came from just five different countries. The United States led the way with 10 jobs followed by the United Kingdom with 6 jobs. I had 2 from Canada and one each from Australia and the Philippines. The latter one being a new client. As for the various topics I was hired to write about during the month, I covered a large spectrum of subjects. I wrote about cellphones, sports betting, socks, multi-level marketing, dating, cleaning services, legal services, and tree cutting services to name a few.

What A Typical Writing Day Is Like

Through a fair deal of trial and error, I have developed a system that seems to work best for me when I have writing to do. The process has several steps to it and I'll break them down for you to explain what takes place with each step.

Step 1 - The Job

The first step is always the job. A client may contact me through Fiverr or via e-mail directly with a writing job they need me to do for them. This usually includes a bit of information such as the length of the article(s), titles to be used, keywords to include, and often links for reference.

Step 2 - Scheduling

As I am writing six days per week, I will usually slot time for a new job as soon as it comes in and I confirm that I can either do the work or have received the work. Some jobs get priority, but most of them get scheduled in the order they are received.

Step 3 - Research

Although some writing jobs come to me with links for reference, unless the idea is that I do a rewrite of that linked page, I will spend a few hours the night before I write an article or set of articles researching the topic online. I will make notes, create files with information, and print all of this off so I have a hard copy to work from.

Step 4 - The Writing

Depending on the day, I may write a single set of articles for a client or several different articles for different clients. A normal writing day for me starts at 9:00 AM and I'll take a short break after each article is completed. I'll stop for lunch at 12 Noon or as close to it as I can. With rare exceptions, I am finished writing for the day by 2:00 PM. I do this Mondays through Saturdays and take Sundays off. I will normally write between 1,000 and 3,000 words per day.

I love being a ghostwriter as it is a career I can continue to work at from home for several years if I so choose. It took me a few years to get established but now that I am, I had to devise a system that kept me on top of the jobs that were coming in and getting finished work to clients within a reasonable time frame. This past month (September 2020) was a much busier one for me as a ghostwriter. Not only were my totals up from last month, but I also picked up new clients along the way. Here is a quick review of what kind of volume I produced.

Everything Went Up For Me

I had a total of 27 writing jobs in September 2020. Of those jobs, just 7 came from Fiverr. The rest were from regular clients of mine. One of my regular clients gave me 9 different jobs during the month. The total number of articles written during September was 110 which ran to 53,925 words.

Where My Business Came From

The majority of my work this past month came from the United States and the United Kingdom. I also had work from Australia and Canada. I worked for new clients in Austria and South Africa. 

What I Wrote About

Topics were all over the map, as they usually are for me. I wrote about such things as granite countertops, wedding services, data recovery, data loggers, socks, medical devices, jewelry, motorcycle parts, marketing, SEO, and signage.

How I Get Inspired

I get asked every so often how I can write so much and about so many different things. Well, it has mostly to do with my clients. The way I get the writing jobs they have to give me a small outline of what they want me to do for them. For example, if a client wants me to write about unusual gift ideas for men, they may include links to some of the products they want me to write specifically about. I then visit those links and write notes about each item. When I piece together the article, those notes help me to construct more details and it goes from there. I typically dedicate a few hours each night to research and write the articles the following morning.

I Have A Reputation

As I mostly write humorous articles, I have some clients who come to me and just suggest a title or topic, include a few keywords to be added to the article, and leave the rest up to me to put together. Sometimes I have to do a re-write, but on average that occurs maybe twice a month. Out of 20+ jobs in a month, that's not too bad. I promote that I write "funny web articles" in my profile on Fiverr. That is where most of the "funny" content requests come to me from. 

I Also Do Contract Work

I am currently working for 4 different content companies. I have a contract in place with one of them. I also write for several website developers who have clients in need of regular content. Then I pick up the odd extra job here and there. What I like about working for content companies and web developers is that they have diverse client bases which means I am not always writing about the same topic in any job I get from these sources. Ultimately, the variety is what I like the most about being a ghostwriter. Having a goofy sense of humour doesn't hurt, either.

My ghostwriting business was a lot more stable during August 2020. I am finally back working with every one of my previous clients and some new ones as well. Although the number of jobs I completed in the past month is down slightly, the number of articles in those orders was up to about my average.

The Numbers

Here is a look at the stats for August: I had a total of 18 orders. The majority of them were direct client contacts with 5 coming from Fiverr. Of those 18 orders, a total of 64 articles were required. I wrote a total of 47,325 words in the month which is about two-thirds of my normal count from pre-COVID months.

Where The Jobs Came From

As I stated, I am back working with all of my previous clients, but I have also a few new ones. I saw some work from regular clients and nothing from a few of my other regular clients. Fortunately, the new business filled those gaps and permitted me to write six days a week, mostly half days. The United States and United Kingdom were neck and neck with 7 jobs from the US and 6 from the UK. Canada, Australia and Romania each provided one job from regular clients. France and Germany were where the new jobs came from and each country provided one each.

The Topics List

As is normally the case, the topics I find myself writing about span the spectrum. In August 2020 there was no exception. I wrote about wedding planning services, wedding videography, dating tips for women, home protection and data loggers. Other topics included back braces, granite countertops and data recovery just to name a few.

What I Like About What I Do

Well, to begin with, I enjoy the fact that my ghostwriting is a career I can follow from the comfort of my home. There is no downtown storefront costing money with rent and utilities. That is one of the most attractive things to me about my work-from-home career. Another plus is that I make my hours. I am rather picky about writing a consistent number of hours per day, if there is writing jobs in the queue. If I want to take a day off, I do. But I keep that down to once per week as I am mostly just writing in the mornings and early afternoons these days.
